Senior Software Engineer
Salary: £55,000 - £65,000
Location: Birmingham (Hybrid - 2 days per week in office)
Industry: Sustainable Technology / Data & Analytics Platforms

The Opportunity

I'm recruiting for a growing Birmingham-based tech company that's building open, scalable software used to power data-driven platforms in the sustainability and energy space. This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer who wants to work on meaningful products, influence technical decisions, and be part of a team that genuinely values good engineering.

You'll be joining a close-knit engineering team of around 12, with a strong senior presence and a collaborative, low-ego culture. Engineers here are trusted to make decisions, challenge ideas, and help shape both the product and the technical roadmap.

What You'll Be Working On
  • Building and evolving large-scale web applications used by organisations across the UK

  • Designing and delivering new platform features end-to-end

  • Improving performance, scalability, and reliability of existing systems

  • Contributing to architectural decisions and long-term technical strategy

  • Mentoring developers and raising engineering standards

  • Working closely with Product, Design, and Data teams

Projects include customer-facing dashboards, data ingestion services, internal tooling, and API-first platforms.

Tech Stack (Open-Source)

  • Backend: PHP (Laravel), Python

  • Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, React

  • APIs: REST, GraphQL

  • Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis

  • Infrastructure: Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD

  • Cloud: AWS

  • Testing: PHPUnit, Jest, automated integration testing

You don't need experience in everything - strong fundamentals and an interest in learning are far more important.

What They're Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer

  • Strong background in modern web application development

  • Experience working with open-source technologies in production

  • Confident making technical decisions and guiding others

  • Comfortable mentoring, reviewing code, and improving processes

  • A pragmatic, collaborative mindset

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 depending on experience

  • Hybrid working: 2 days per week in a Birmingham office

  • 25 days holiday plus UK bank holidays

  • Flexible working hours and a strong focus on work-life balance

  • Company pension scheme with employer contribution

  • Private healthcare and wellbeing support

  • Annual learning and development budget for training, courses, and conferences

  • Modern equipment provided (laptop, peripherals, etc.)

  • Regular team events and knowledge-sharing sessions

Why Apply?

This role offers the chance to work on technically interesting, real-world problems in a stable yet fast-moving environment, without excessive bureaucracy. If you're a Senior Engineer looking for autonomy, impact, and a strong benefits package in Birmingham, this is well worth a conversation.
