Project Development Engineer - Energy Efficiency & Resiliency

    Overview
This role focuses on the development side of engineering within energy efficiency and resiliency projects. The engineer will visit customer sites-including federal, healthcare, and private education facilities-to analyze existing energy systems, gather data, and design customized solutions. Projects may include rooftop solar with battery storage, LED lighting upgrades, HVAC retrofits, and water conservation systems.

Unlike a pure design engineer or project manager, this role serves as the front-end technical driver: auditing, modeling, and developing the concepts that ultimately get built.

    Why It Matters
Development engineers are essential for identifying energy savings opportunities and creating designs that meet client goals for cost savings, resiliency, and modernization. Their work sets the foundation for project execution and long-term client satisfaction.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct preliminary site audits, utility data analysis, and energy modeling.

    • Develop baseline energy profiles and design retrofit solutions.

    • Create conceptual and detailed designs, cost estimates, drawings, and specifications.

    • Collaborate with vendors and contractors for pricing and feasibility.

    • Support sales teams with proposals and technical presentations.

    • Provide technical guidance from project development through construction and commissioning.

    • Assist with light project management (handoffs to PMs, stakeholder alignment).

    Qualifications (Non-Negotiables)

    • Minimum 5 years of project engineering experience in energy efficiency/renewables.

    • Hands-on experience developing efficiency projects (not just managing them).

    • Strong ability to analyze building energy use and design solutions.

    • Familiarity with systems such as HVAC, VFDs, chillers/boilers, lighting retrofits, and distributed generation/renewables.

    • BSME, BSEE, or related technical degree required.

    • Proficiency with energy modeling software (eQuest or similar).

    In Short
This is not a construction PM role. It is a technical development engineering role focused on auditing, analyzing, and designing energy efficiency and resiliency projects. Success in this position means turning client goals into actionable designs that can be built and delivered.
