Trainee Underwriter - Nottingham - Hybrid - £29,000 + Bonus

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Underwriter to join an established financial services business based in Nottingham.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career within underwriting, lending or financial services, with full training and ongoing development provided.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing finance applications and making informed lending decisions based on a customer's affordability, stability and intent. The role will involve asking detailed questions, actively listening to customers and challenging information where appropriate to ensure responsible and positive customer outcomes.

You will also take ownership of inbound and outbound calls with customers, dealers and internal teams, ensuring applications are processed efficiently while maintaining a high level of customer service.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Assessing and completing new finance applications.
• Making informed lending decisions based on detailed customer information.
• Using effective questioning and active listening to assess affordability, stability and intent.
• Handling inbound and outbound calls with customers, dealers and internal stakeholders.
• Accurately documenting applications, decisions and outcomes.
• Taking ownership of individual performance and identifying areas for improvement.
• Working collaboratively within the underwriting team to ensure an efficient application process.
• Contributing to improvements across the customer journey and underwriting process.

Requirements

• 6 months plus experience working in a commercial environment (doesn't have to be the same industry but that will be favoured).
• Personable, communicative nature and desire to learn.
• Strong decision-making skills and the ability to assess information objectively.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong active listening and questioning skills.
• Clear and confident communication skills.
• A customer-focused approach with an understanding of positive customer outcomes.
• A self-motivated attitude and genuine desire to learn and develop.
• The ability to adapt communication and approach to different customers and situations.
• The confidence to challenge information appropriately and professionally.

Desirables

Previous experience within underwriting, lending, financial services, customer service, customer-facing, sales or a telephone-based environment would be beneficial, although full training will be provided.

The Company

The successful candidate will join an established financial services organisation with a strong focus on customer outcomes, employee development and continuous improvement.

The role is based from the company's Nottingham office. During the initial training period, you will be required to attend the office full time. After a couple months, more flexibility will be introduced, going down to 3 days in the office, 2 days WFH. All equipment provided for home and office working.

Starting salary will be £29,000 with a quick progression scheme to progress this over a short time. Further benefits include an annual bonus scheme, holiday buy and sell scheme, internal training schemes, private healthcare schemes and lots more.
