Project Manager - BESS

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager - Owner's Representative to oversee the development and execution of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role will act as the owner's point of contact, providing oversight of EPCs, suppliers, and contractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. The ideal candidate will come from an EPC or major equipment supplier background and have experience managing $50M-$100M+ utility-scale energy or infrastructure projects.

This is an in-office position based out of our Detroit office on Tuesdays, with regular travel to project sites throughout the week. The primary project site is located just outside of Detroit, and overnight travel is not required.

Key Responsibilities

• Represent the owner throughout the full project lifecycle, from pre-construction through commissioning and close-out

• Provide oversight and governance of EPC partners, major suppliers, and subcontractors

• Manage project budgets in the $50M-$100M+ range, including cost tracking, forecasting, and change management

• Review and validate EPC schedules, execution plans, and construction methodologies

• Coordinate closely with engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations teams

• Serve as the primary liaison between internal stakeholders, EPCs, utilities, OEMs, and regulatory bodies

• Monitor project risks and proactively drive mitigation strategies

• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards

• Lead progress meetings and deliver clear, accurate reporting to executive leadership

Required Qualifications

• Proven experience managing large-scale construction or energy projects valued at $50M-$100M+

• Background with EPC firms or major equipment suppliers, preferably supporting utility-scale BESS, solar, wind, or complex infrastructure projects

• Strong understanding of EPC contract structures, procurement strategies, and construction sequencing

• Experience overseeing third-party contractors rather than self-performing construction

• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct experience delivering utility-scale BESS projects

• Prior experience transitioning from EPC or supplier roles into an owner-side capacity

• Familiarity with battery technology, power conversion systems, and utility interconnection processes

• PMP or similar project management certification
